It’s a strange day for all Americans as we get back to our routines in the wake of the Sandy Hook horror. We are especially thinking of our 52 million schoolchildren who are returning to a place they — and we — believe to be safe. And while this is overwhelmingly true, Newtown shows that even the most carefully planned security systems like that at Sandy Hook Elementary School can be breached. We therefore echo the President’s call for “meaningful action” to assure that this never happens again.
NSBA’s leadership expressed our shared sympathy late on Friday. Today as we return to our daily lives, let’s take a moment to remember the gentle lives lost. To honor the courage of teachers and administrators who ran toward danger, not away from it, in order to protect their young charges, six of whom paid the ultimate price for it. And grieve for the families whose pain will never go away.
